The town of Lisse forms part of the western Nederland municipalities and situated in the South Holland province. The town has a long and culture rich history dating back to 1198 and in 1998 celebrated its 800th anniversary. During the 17th and 18th centuries, rich merchants and nobleman occupied large and well kept estates in the area. Sadly, in the years that followed these estates were removed to make way for the cultivation of tulips and other bulb flowers. Although the flower business brought prosperity to the area, large stretches of forest had to be cut down and dunes excavated to make room for flower farming.

One of the main attractions to the area is Keukenhof, situated on the outskirts of Lisse, renowned for its flower garden, said to be the largest in the world. An amazing 7,000,000 [seven million] flower bulbs are planted here annually. Ironically Keukenhof was the only estate not removed for the cultivation of bulb flowers. Another interesting place to visit is, ‘De Zwarte Tulp’ museum. The full history of bulb growing by the Dutch is on exhibition in this very famous museum. More interesting, and in close proximity to the town of Lisse is the restored, 14th century castle tower called ‘Huys Dever’. Founded in 1375, it was the home of knight Reinier Ever.

The easiest and quite affordable way of getting around is by car. For the simple reason that you can stop whenever you want and spend more time admiring the many places of interest. The roads around Lisse are well signposted and there are frequent road side parking areas for sightseeing or just to stretch the legs.
