Limassol is surrounded by areas of scenic beauty and historical importance. Many ruins dating back to Greco-Roman times can be found in the vicinity of the city, and the coastline offers a plethora of delightful beaches and sheltered coves to choose from.

At nearby Larnaca, the ancient seafront fortress and St Lazarus Church are symbols of the area’s past. The fortress was originally built to act as a defence against invaders and was later used as a prison, and the church is apparently built on the site where the remains of St Lazarus were originally discovered.

In the northwest of Larnaca, you can find the ruins of ancient Kition, as the area was called in Old Testament times. The remains of five temples can be found here, as can the lower part of the northern city walls, which are constructed from enormous boulders.

Ayia Napa and Protaras are both resorts blessed with superb beaches. Protaras is quieter and caters more for family holidays; while Ayia Napa abounds with nightlife and is the perfect place for those looking for some party action.

The Troodos Mountains are spectacularly scenic and are dotted with interesting, friendly villages. One of these is Lefkara, famous for its lace-making, and where Leonardo da Vinci is said to have once bought an altar cloth. Another is Pitsilia, where you can sample the villagers’ homemade cheese and honey.

On either side of Limassol are Kourion and Amathus, two ancient Greco-Roman settlements, with some significant historical structures. In Kourion, the old amphitheatre has been completely restored, and today you can enjoy watching plays at this amazing venue overlooking the Mediterranean.
