Car Hire Lexington - Mini guide to Lexington

The city of Lexington, located in a delightful bourbon saturated area, is the birthplace of Kentucky bluegrass music. There’s no better place in America to hear the rock and roll and country music hybrid, or test the locally distilled bourbon. Additionally, many pleasant national parks and historical sites are scattered around this friendly region.

Lexington boasts some interesting historical sites, including the Mary Todd Lincoln House, the former home of the famously eccentric wife of Abraham Lincoln. At night, the city really comes alive, as the streets hum with the many live bands playing in country style pubs and bars.

Five bourbon distilleries are located around the Lexington area, and visitors to the distilleries can take a free tour and have a mouthful of the local drink. The distilleries are: Wild Turkey Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Heaven Hill Distilleries in Bardstown, Maker’s Mark Distillery in Loretto, Labrot and Graham Distillery in Versailles, and Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort.

Lexington is also a great base from which to explore the surrounding area. Frankfort, not far from Lexington, is the state capital and includes sights such as the Old State House, the State Historical Society and Liberty Hall. Also of interest is the grave of the American adventurer Daniel Boone.

The largest known cave system in the world is located west of Lexington, just off I-64. The seemingly never-ending caves can be explored with a guide. After your stint in the hollow darkness, you can hike, ride a horse, canoe, boat or camp in the vast stretches of lush wilderness in the area.

For some more great music, Renfro Valley, near Boone Forest, is home to the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame and Museum; additionally, in nearby Ohio county, you will find the home of the legendary father of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe. Another related place of interest is the International Bluegrass Music Museum, in Owensboro.

Lexington is well served by America’s extensive interstate highway system. I-75 and I-64 serve Lexington. I-64 enters the state from the west, from St Louis, and goes through Louisville and Lexington, and on to Charleston, West Virginia. Greyhound buses run to destinations throughout the state. Louisville International Airport is served by few international carriers; thus, if you are coming from overseas, it is likely you will be routed through Chicago, Atlanta or New York.

The major suburbs in Lexington are: Baralto, Crestwood, Deep Spring, Gardenside, Highlands, Landsdowne, Pinehurst, Sandersville, Southeastern Hills and Warrenton.
