Mini guide to Lemnos
Quaint and quiet, Lemnos is a more relaxed tourist destination than many of the other islands in the Aegean. Located in the East Aegean Islands, it is also good for hopping over to the Turkish coast.
The most important and well-preserved archaeological site on the island is the Hephaistia. This site is the ruin of an ancient city dedicated to the god of metallurgy, Hephaestus. It is said in mythology that after the god left Olympus, he made Lemnos his home.
Below an Ottoman Turk castle lies the islands chief town, Mirina. This city is a good base for touring the island. A helpful introduction to the islands archaeological sites can be found at the citys archaeological museum.
Good restaurants and hotels can be found in Mirinas central square along with opportunities to sample Limnian honey and two famous Limnian wines, Kalavaki and Moschato. The city also has two decent public beaches, Romeilos Yialos and Riha Nera.
There are two options for exploring the island thoroughly, there is a tour bus that goes to the major archaeological sites, or you can rent a car and explore the island in your own time. In addition to the Hephaistia, Lemnos has two other major sites. These are the Kavirio and the Poliochni. The Kavirio is the ruins of a once extensive temple situated on a rocky promontory over the ocean, and the Poliochni is a fascinating site still under excavation.
There are three daily flights between Athens and Lemnos, or if you choose the island can also be reached by hydrofoil from Piraeus and several other Aegean islands.
