Car Hire Lecco - Mini guide to Lecco

Your journey in Italy would not be complete without visiting the city of Lecco which is capital to the province of the same name. It is conveniently located just 50 kilometres away from Milan and lies at the eastern end of the Lake Como that takes up the shape of an inverted “Y”.

It is primarily an industrial city having entered the industrial revolution when it first began. Lecco boasts of a population of around 47,000 people. The prime industry that was initiated a long time ago is the mining of iron ore. Another industry of renown is the production of raw silk as the town is surrounded by mulberry bushes with their resident silk worms.

The city is not confined by its industries but has its own exquisite churches, buildings, some breathtaking monuments and last but not the least, the waterfront and the bridges across the water.

The waterfront to the city is not only formed by the famous Lake Como but also by the River Adda whose mouth sits at the old city centre. There are three bridges across the river namely the Ponte Visconti Bridge, the Kennedy Bridge and the Alessandro Manzoni Bridge. The Ponte Visconti is a very old bridge that was built in the 14th century (1336-38 A.D.) while the other bridges were built fairly recently.

Some of the sights that are not to be missed when you are visiting Lecco are the Piazza Cermenati, Piazza XX Novembre, the Basilica San Nicola (Cathedral) along with its tower called La Torre di Viscontea, Palazzo Viscontea and the Palazzotto di Don Rodrigo.

If you have interest in arts and poetry, you should make it a point to go and visit the Manzoni Museum, Vallo delle Mura (art gallery) and the city’s theatre called the Il Teatro Sociale. There are also many churches of repute that are quite characteristic of Italian cities.

There are mountains that give a beautiful charm to the place and give you a spectacular view of the city. This makes for wonderful days hiking or trekking if you hold an interest in these activities.
