Car Hire Leatherhead - Mini guide to Leatherhead
Picturesquely located in the Mole Valley of northern Surrey, Leatherhead provides an excellent base for visitors wishing to explore the beautiful Surrey Hills, surrounding countryside and variety of nearby attractions.
To the south of the town is its most significant landmark, the medieval church of St Mary and St Nicholas. Its 15th century tower overlooks the flood plain of the River Mole, a scene that inspired the landscape painter Joseph Turner to capture it in watercolours. The interior of the church has a carved chalk chancel arch dating from the latter part of the 12th century and rebuilt in the 14th century.
Part of Leatherhead's charm is its heritage of buildings. Medieval timber framed buildings stand next to well proportioned Georgian houses and imposing Victorian Gothic villas. A good starting point for the exploration of historic Leatherhead is Hampton Cottage on Church Street, a well preserved 17th century timber framed house which doubles as the home of the Leatherhead Museum of Local History.
The lovely River Mole makes its way between islands and under the delightful 14-arch town bridge, and nearby the shops, cafés, galleries and theatre sit among an eclectic mix of architectural styles. Cultural activities and town centre events occur regularly throughout the year and include the annual arts festival in October when every aspect of the arts in the district is explored and celebrated. The town centre consists of the pedestrianised High Street, housing many shops and restaurants.
Surrounding the town are attractions to suit all ages. The glory of the Surrey Hills is the area's greatest attraction. Designated as one of the country's most outstanding landscapes, within the hills are picturesque villages, guided walks and historic houses, including Norbury Park, Ashtead Park and Polesden Lacey.
More modern destinations include: Bocketts Farm, where children can experience farm animals first-hand; Chessington World of Adventures, one of the country's leading theme parks; and Denbies Wine Estate, England's largest working winery.
Leatherhead lies just off the M25 (junction 9) at the gateway to the Surrey Hills and is halfway between Heathrow and Gatwick Airports, with a fast and frequent train service to Central London.
