This area was founded in 1106 and was declared a free Imperial city by the King Rudolf I Von Habsburg in 1291. It was still seized in the 1324 by a prominent landowner who happened to be the bishop of Speyer. The ancient rights of this city were only returned in 1511.
You will find that most of the economy of this city is made from its wine production and the centre square contains many historic buildings like the town hall and market hall. This city is perhaps most famous for the invention of an open carriage that was named a landau after the city.
