Resting in the shadow of one of Portugal's most important places of pilgrimage, the ancient city of Lamego, once known as the ‘Land of Promise,’ spreads itself across the terraced slopes of the fertile Douro valley. The port wine region was first noted as a see in the late 6th century, and came to be an important trading post under Moorish occupation. As entrancing as it is rich in heritage, Lamego has much to offer modern travellers.
Perched on a hill overlooking the city, the Gothic Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (Our Lady of Remedies) can be reached by passing through 17th century gardens to climb the sanctuary's beautifully decorated baroque stairs. On the second of two hills stands Lamego's 12th century castle with its 13th century keep, bearing a unique Moorish vaulted cistern.
Winding their way down from the hills through narrow streets, visitors can admire the baroque fountains and statues of immaculately kept 17th century houses. An 18th century episcopal palace holds the town's museum, which displays works by the Portuguese master, Vasco Fernandes. Within a few miles of the museum, visitors will find Portugal's oldest church, the 7th century chapel of São Pedro de Balsemão.
Known for its superb port wine, the region invites visitors to take wine tasting tours by hire car, which can be combined with a trip to the pretty woodlands of Serra das Meadas National Park. Lamego's tiny, romantic restaurants and cafés are among the city's greatest pleasures, while the masked, late summer carnival procession in nearby Lazarim is not to be missed.
Lamego is a 1-hour, 30-minute drive from Porto’s airport, and is linked to all major cities in Portugal and Europe by train. Walking is an excellent way to see the town, but for excursions outside the city a hire car is highly recommended.
