The Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, built in 1444, sports spectacular views over the bay, and the city's Museau Municipal hosts a fabulous array of Roman artwork and weaponry.
No less than nine beaches grace the wide, deep-water bay of Lagos, making it an ideal destination for sun-worshipers and culture-seekers alike. Windsurfing, scuba diving, sailing and golf are some of the region's most popular diversions, as well as daytrips to the north, where the winding road leads through the lush green landscape of Southwest Natural Park.
A gourmand's delight, Lagos is famous for a wide variety of local dishes of fish, almonds, figs and eggs, best accompanied by a glass of the region's muscatel wine. Shopping is abundant, and the city plays host to countless numbers of festivals that take place throughout the year.
The city's old town is best admired on foot, with local buses providing transport around town. A hire car is highly recommended, however, to visit the plethora of scenic, out of the way villages in the area. Lisbon Portela Airport is 3 hours, 30 minutes away by rental car, and the city’s central train station offers connections to major cities in Portugal or other European destination.
