Mini guide to La Rochelle
La Rochelle, known as the most attractive and unspoiled seaside town in France, attracts tourists with its beautiful beaches, historic waterfront architecture and traditional atmosphere.
The highlight of the town is the picturesque Rue du Palais, which stretches from Vieux Port to Place de Verdun. The street is lined with quaint buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries, including the famous Hotel de la Bourse, Maison Henri II, the cathedral and chic Café de la Paix. To the west of Rue du Palais is more historic architecture, particularly on Rue de lEscale and Rue Fromentin, with its acclaimed Musee dOrbigny-Bernon. To the east lie the Hotel de Ville on Rue du Temple, the Musee du Nouveau Monde on Rue des Merciers, and the Musee des Beaux Arts on Rue Gargoulleau.
The old harbour area of Vieux Port is interesting with its Gothic Porte de la Grosse Horloge and charming quays. Take the tree-lined Cours des Dames to the magnificent Tour de la Chaine, dating from the 14th century. Other ancient towers nearby include the Tour St Nicolas and Tour de la Lanterne.
Relax at the shady Place de la Fourche and stroll through the narrow lanes off Rue St Nicolas and Rue St Sauveur. For a livelier scene, head for Port des Minimes, where numerous excellent restaurants, cafes and bars line the modern marina complex, or toast the sunset at the stunning Plage des Minimes. Families can delight in the spectacular aquarium located at one end of the beach.
The coast around La Rochelle, and the nearby islands are great for families, with numerous safe sandy beaches. In the cooler months, the area becomes quite charming, with quiet misty seascapes and quaint fishing ports creating a tranquil, traditional atmosphere.
