Car Rental La Rochelle - Exploring La Rochelle
The Poitou-Charentes region, with some of the finest Romanesque churches in France, is an historical delight. Driving along the smaller roads is immensely enjoyable, as the A10 motorway takes the brunt of the traffic sweeping through the region.
The town of Saintes to the south, in the Charente Valley, is charming and relaxed, with a rich heritage of Roman and medieval buildings. Here you can visit the remains of Roman baths and an amphitheatre. Additionally, a wonderful archaeological museum displays many Roman artefacts.
The Abbaye aux Dames is a lovely Romanesque church with beautifully carved portals and fine carvings within. Also noteworthy is the Église St Eutrope, another Romanesque church built over a 3rd century crypt.
To the southeast of La Rochelle is the home of the double-distilled brandy that bears its name - Cognac. Take a tour of the famous distilleries here, including those of the well-known companies, Hennessy and Martell. The Otard warehouse in its Renaissance chateau is also a must-see.
Included on most tours is a look at the production and a walk around the cellars, not forgetting, of course, the all-important sample or two. The Museum of Cognac is also quite interesting, not only for its dedication to cognac brandy, but also for the fine paintings and glazed earthenware pottery on display.
To the east of La Rochelle and set on the slopes of two hills overlooking the River Sèvre Niortaise, is the town of Niort. The huge castle keep, dating from the 12th to 13th centuries, dominates the river. The oldest part of the town comprises several medieval houses and a 16th century former town hall.
