The airport was established in 1999, but it was not constructed for international flights. Even though it has been financed with millions of dollars spent to improve it, it is still not used for inter-insular traffic. It has designed itself as an important part of the exterior communication for the town's locals and the tourism development of the island.

The airport traffic of La Gomera has seen continuous growth potential in the number of passengers that have flown in recent years. During the last six years, the traffic volume has tripled and records a total of 34,496 passengers who travelled in 2005, to 3.396 operational flights and 6 tonnes of cargo.

There are two local flights that travel each day between Las Palmas and La Gomera. Tourists can rent cars from the airport to use as vacation transportation around the island. Adequate parking is available at the airport.

If you were travelling from the UK, you would have to fly to Tenerife first, which would take about four and a half hours and then from there, you take an adjoining flight to La Gomera.
