Car Hire La Fleche, Shell Station - Mini guide to La Fleche, Shell Station
One of the communes in the French département of Sarthe in western portion of the country, is La Flčche with a land area of about seventy-five square kilometers and a population of less than twenty thousand inhabitants.
La Flčche is well known for the Prytanée National Militaire, which is a military-managed French school. Originally named as the Collčge Royal Henry-Le-Grand, the school offers high school level education and preparatory courses, equivalent to the early years of university studies to students who would like to join a military academy in France.
The building of the Prytanée National Militaire was a 16th century castle in La Flčche. This was where the king of Navarre, Antoine de Bourbon, and his wife, Jeanne d'Albret, lived in 1552. In 1604, their son, Henry IV gave the castle to the Jesuits in order to start a college with the aim of training the best minds of their time. This college was given the name ""Collčge Royal Henry-Le-Grand.""
The Jesuit College continues to grow. After the death of Henry IV, a large church was built to enshrine his and his wife’s, Marie de Medicis, hearts.
In 1764 Louis XV transformed the college into a military school after the eviction of the Jesuits. The College was closed at the beginning of the French Revolution, and then in 1808 Napoleon reopened the college giving it the name Prytanée Militaire.
At present, the Prytanée offers high school and preparatory classes to prepare the students for the entrance examinations to the French military.
