La Coruna is situated in North-West Spain in the province of Galicia. It is the second largest city in the province. Coruna is on a peninsula facing to the Atlantic Ocean and has wide beaches. La Coruna has had an importance in history since Roman times. The port was an important place on sailing routes. One of the most well-known tourist attractions is the Roman Tower of Hercules. This has stood for 2,000 years and was made into a lighthouse in 1791 and is still in operation. The town has developed over the years around the natural harbour along the Avenida de laMarina. This is where tourists will see ‘les galerias’. These are glazed window balconies originally introduced to combat the challenging weather of the area. They were introduced in the 18th century from a naval idea and take the shape of the back of a war ship. These have earned the city the nickname of ‘Crystal City’.

La Coruna has a temperate maritime climate, which can change due to its proximity to the Atlantic. Very strong winds can occur in the Autumn and Winter. Rain is often abundant due to Atlantic depressions. Summer is comfortable because of the wind blowing in from the Atlantic and the Spring is a calm and comfortable season.

La Coruna airport is situated in the north of the province. If you are travelling by car, take the N-550 in the direction of Culleredo and take the exit signs to the airport. A regular bus service is provided by ASICASA between La Coruna and the airport. Taxis also travel to the terminal from the town.
