In 1135, the rulers of the castle and the landlords of the surrounding lands were the counts of Andechs-Meranien. Along with the counts of Turingian Orlamünde started the development of the city. First, the city was divided into two parts - Ansbach and Kulmbach.
In 1963, when the castle of Plassenburg was abandoned, the city of Kulmbach lost its importance. Today, Kulmbach is a township with a fair amount of inhabitants. It does not have much places to visit. The castle of Plassenburg is a museum today. It might be worth your time. You can also take a look at the churches in the city if you like.
