Car Hire in Kos - Getting to Kos
The Dodecanese islands are one of the furthest from Athens, making them more difficult to get to. For this reason they are quieter, less touristy and free of the ferry-hordes. There is no international airport on Kos which denies it plane-loads of package tourists.
The quickest way to get to Kos is by plane. From Athens the journey takes only 50 minutes. The Islands airport is in Andimahia, 27km south-west of Kos town. There are daily flights from Athens western airport (Eleutherios Venizelos) to the island. Kos neighbour, Rhodes, has an international airport. There are taxis and shuttle bus services from the airport to Kos town and other destinations around the island.
The other option is to reach Kos by ferry. From the mainland the ferry leaves from Piraeus Athens), with daily services to and from the island. Being so remote, the distance takes approximately 24 hours. Departure times in both directions tend to be geared to an early-morning arrival, meaning onward island-hops can involve some antisocial hours. There is also a boat service to and from Rhodes and Kalymnos. Rhodes has ferries to Turkey.
