Knoxville: The Largest City In Tennesse
Founded in the year 1786, Knoxville is the 3rd largest city in Tennesse, and is also the county sear of the Knox County. The city is named after Henry Knox, the first Secretary of War. It is also nicknamed as ‘The Marble City’, as during the early years of the 20th century, a number of mines were supplying Tennessee pink marble to the country (Washington’s National Gallery of Art) is constructed from Knoxville marble.
The city was also called as Underwear Capital of the World, as during the 1930s, there were at least 20 clothing and textile mills in the city. But in the 1950-60s, the textile industries fell victim of the foreign competition and began to decline. The world fair of 1982 was extremely successful and became very popular world fair in the history of the US, attracting more than 11 million visitors.
The 266 feet tall sunsphere, a steel structure topped with bronze-colored sphere of glass, was constructed for the world fair, and it still remains one of the most prominent buildings in the city.
The climate of the city is humid sub-tropical, although due to higher elevations in the west and the south, it is not that hot. The summers of the area of hot and extremely humid, the average temperature during July is 31°C. Winters are usually cool, with average temperature ranging from 8°C to -2°C.
As per the US Census Bureau, the total area of the city is 254.1 km², out of which 240.0 km² is land and 14.1 km² is water. This means that 5.5 % of the city is water. Primary highways that serve the city are Interstate 40 to the Nashville and Asheville, North Carolina and the Interstate 75 to Lexington and Chattanooga.
