Car Rental Knock - Exploring Knock
Within an hour drive of Knock is the most extensive Stone Age site in the world. The Ceide Fields, situated 8kms west of Ballycastle, contains a 1,500 hectare archaeological site of stone walls, field systems, enclosures and tombs dating from about 5,000 years ago, all of which have been preserved beneath the bog. If you want to learn about the amazing geology, archaeology, botany and wildlife of this region of North Mayo, then check out the Ceide Fields Visitors' Centre, which has audio-visual presentations and exhibitions. Guided tours of a section of the Ceide Fields are also provided.
About 50kms south of Knock lies the rugged and wild region of Connemara. Drive along winding roads through lonely valleys, bogs and mountain passes of unsurpassable beauty. The Twelve Bens, a mountain range that runs to the coast, offers hiking trails and spectacular views of the ocean. Along the coast there are cliffs and pristine beaches to enjoy. The small town of Spiddal is a pleasant stop along the way. The area around Lough Inagh valley and Kylemore Lake is particularly stunning.
North of Knock town is Croagh Patrick, a picturesque mountain with great views of the surrounding area. It is tradition for people to climb the mountain as a form of penance, often in bare feet. It is roughly a three-hour hike to the top, depending on how fit you are of course.
