Mini guide to Klagenfurt
Klagenfurt, with its idyllic surroundings and beautiful nature, is understandably a favourite summer lakeside resort for Europeans. The town itself is sleepy but charming and a good stopover point if you are exploring the Carinthia lake region.
The town itself is a university city dating back to 1161 and is the provincial capital of Carinthia. The historic city centre can easily explored on foot. It is quadrangular in shape and surrounded by streets that were created atop the old city wall which was destroyed in the Napoleonic invasions. The Neuer Platz (New Square) lies in the centre of this quadrangle. In the centre of the square you will find a fountain in the shape of a ferocious dragon called the Lindwurm, the city's symbol.
By car it is easy to explore the surrounding lakes and towns. A local summer favourite is the nearby Wörther See (Lake Wörther), on the western side of the city. Also, don’t miss other historic sites in the area within an easy driving distance -- St. Veit, Hochosterwitz Castle, Magdelensberg, and the Cathedral of Gurk. Slovenia is also only 31kms north of Klagenfurt and worth a day trip or a longer visit.
Klagenfurt Airport is located just northeast of the city and is easily accessible. The primary carrier is Austrian Airlines, with direct flights from Zurich, Rome and Frankfurt. If travelling to Klagenfurt by car from Vienna, take the A2 motorway south to the junction with route 17, then route 83. The distance from Vienna is about 200kms.
The city has very strict parking rules. There are so-called ‘blue zones’ where you can park with special vouchers for up to 90 minutes – you will see blue lines on the roads. These vouchers can be easily purchased at shops, banks, petrol stations etc. and you have to write in the time you arrived and display the voucher inside your front windscreen.
