There is an area just west of the Gulf of Mexico called The Wild Horse Desert. Early settlers gave it this name and in this area is the historic town of Kingsville. Kingsville is said to be the birthplace of the American ranching industry. A Captain Richard E. King purchased land in 1853 that was formally part of the Rincon de Santa Gertrudis Spanish Land Grant. He fenced and cleared the land, changing these coastal plains forever.

There were marauding Indians to be fought off but the area prospered. Captain King moved an entire village from Mexico to the area and the residents of that village became some of Texas' first cowboys. Today the descendants of those Kinenos can still be seen on the streets of downtown Kingsville. Mrs. Henrietta King, Captain King's wife, donated land to enable churches, colleges and schools to prosper. Her legacy can still be seen today.

More than one million acres of habitat comprised of shoreline, brush, and arid desert supports more than 450 species. This diverse habitat and the fact that Kingsville is located within the two greatest bird migratory flight paths in the United States make it a year round prime destination for bird watching opportunities.
