Car Hire in Key West - Getting to Key West
Key West International Airport is the most-used airport on the islands, although Marathon Airport also has a limited and generally much more expensive service. Key West is also the place to catch flights to the Dry Tortugas National Park. Long haul arrivals will however have to land at Miami and get a connection or shuttle (2-3 hours by car).
Greyhound buses leave Miami's Bayside Station for the five-hour trip to the station at the Key West Airport several times daily.
By car from Key West, take the dual lane US Hwy 1 and follow it all the way to mainland Miami. There are keenly enforced speed limits at various places along the route.
Take note: addresses in the Keys work on a system of mile markers (MM), which are located along the Overseas Hwy (Hwy 1): mile 0 is in Key West at the corner of Fleming and Whitehead Sts, and the final marker, MM 126, is 1 mile south of Florida City.
Commercial ferry services to Key West arent very practical, but its a popular place for private yachts, day cruises can be taken if you want to enjoy the scenery from the water. If you have a yacht masters certificate, you can charter a small yacht.
