Car Hire in Kefalonia - Getting to Kefalonia
Kefalonia lies among the Ionian chain of islands off the western coast of mainland Greece and boasts good air and water connections. The airport is located about eight kilometres south of Argostoli right on the coast, and there are regular flights from Athens (three flights daily on Olympic Airways) and many other European cities.
Those visitors arriving on package holidays with chartered airlines will usually have a transfer to the hotel included in the deal. Other visitors will have to take a taxi to their resort as public transport is pretty scarce. A regular taxi fare to Argostoli will cost about 10.
As with most Greek islands, it's easier to get to Kefalonia in summer than in the off season, when weather and reduced tourism eliminate the smaller boats. Throughout the year there is one car/passenger ferry that leaves daily at 12:30 from Patras, arriving at Sami 2 hours, 30 minutes later. From here, there are taxis available to take you to your hotel.
From Sami, the ferry continues on to Ithaca before returning to Patras. There is also at least one car/passenger ferry a day leaving from Killini (on the northwestern tip of the Peloponnese) at noon and arriving at Argostoli at about 13:30.
Another ferry goes from Killini daily at 20:00, landing at Poros port in southern Kefalonia; the trip takes 1 hour, 30 minutes. During the high season, ships also go to and from Corfu, Ithaki, Levkas, and other islands and ports, but they do not necessarily hold to the same schedules every year.
