Mini guide to Kavala-Megas Alexandros Airport
Kavalas international airport is small, serving approximately 400,000 passengers per year. However, it is important, as it serves a number of popular Greek destinations, including the island of Thassos and the towns of Thessaloniki, Prinos and Limenas.
Owing to Kavalas diminutive size, it has only one terminal which receives all the airlines serving the airport. There are nine check-in desks, six gates and two baggage claim belts, so its difficult to get lost. Airlines flying to and from Kaval are: Aegean Aviation, Aero Lloyd, Air Berlin, Air Holland, Avianca, BWA, Britannia Cargo, Cronus Airlines, Eurowings, Fischer Air, LOT, LTU International, Lufthansa CityLine, Malev, Olympic, Premiair, SAS-Scandinavian, Sabre Airways, Slovak Airlines and Transavia.
Passenger facilities are limited, and there is no exchange bureau, so if coming from outside Europe, remember to change money beforehand as you will need to pay in Euros for transport from the airport.
Kavala Airport is situated 29kms southeast of the city, towards Keramoti. Parking options are limited, with only 160 short-term parking spots available. It is in fairly easy driving distance from both Keramoti ferry port and Kavala harbour, and taxis are available to both. The drive to the ferry port takes 15 to 20 minutes, and the taxi fare is roughly 10. Kavala harbour is situated 30 to 40 minutes away and a taxi will cost you about 15.
