Car Hire Kalix - Mini guide to Kalix

Kalix is the most northerly coastal Swedish town, lying just 50kms west of the Finnish border over the top of the Gulf of Bothia. With car rental in Kalix you can explore this fascinating and remote area of the country, bearing in mind that it sees almost perpetual dark in the winter months.

The town only has a populace of around 7,000, but is highly rewarding for those who venture out this far due to the vastness and starkness of the landscapes. You can get here by combination of plane (to nearby Lulea) and bus, or take a train all the way from Stockholm, and then have cheap car hire in Kalix.

With car hire in Kalix you can head across to the Finnish border beyond the town of Tomio and continue on around the Bay of Bothia, or head west and south to other popular northern Swedish towns. Lulea is the next significant town down and has a fantastic setting, presiding over numerous islands in the Gulf.

Lulea is a lot bigger than Kalix and has a decent amount of shopping and hotels. You can also head south again and see the smaller town of Pitea where the water theme is continued. The Pitea archipelago is striking any time of year with car hire in Kalix and this area also has some of the best cross-country skiing in the country in winter.

Farther south again is Skelleftea, although this is not the prettiest town and you’d be better off heading north with car rental in Kalix after Pitea.
