Kaiserslautern is a city found in south west Germany, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, at the verge of the Palatinate forest (Germany’s largest forest area); there are many hiking trails available for the nature-lover, so if the outdoors is your thing, pack your backpack or rucksack! Within the city and in its surrounds live approximately 45,000 NATO military personnel, mostly American, who put back $1billion in the Kaiserslautern economy. The affectionately call Kaiserslautern ‘K-town’.

Kaiserslautern is believed to have been inhabited some 800 years BC, with archaeological finds giving evidence to this. Also, Celtic tombs at least 2,500 years old have been uncovered in a town about 30 kilometres from Kaiserslautern.

In medieval times, the river Lauter made the old section of the ancient town of Kaiserslautern an island. At that time, the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa (who ruled from 1155 to 1190) built a castle in front of where the modern day Town Hall is located (the ruins can still be seen today). Because of the influence of Barbarossa, Kaiserslautern is sometimes known as ‘Barbarossa’s Town’. Indeed, the coat of arms bears an open-mouthed pike, reportedly Barbarossa’s favourite fish.

Kaiserslautern’s oldest church, the Stiftkirche, was built over the period from 1250 to 1350, and over the last fifty years another church was built by an order of monks – Saint Martin’s Church. Standing in the courtyard of the church can be seen the original city walls.

Being owned by the French (amongst others) up until 1815, after the French power declined Kaiserslautern and the Palatinate became a Barvarian province until 1918, when, after WWI, French troops held the Palatinate. WWII heavily damaged Kaiserslautern, with 11,000 of the 20,000 homes damaged or destroyed. The cemetery wall bears marks of the war, and in 1945 the 80th US division seized the town with little resistance. The economy remained slow until 1952, when construction began on new garrisons for the American troops.
