Car Hire in Jersey - Getting to Jersey
Jersey is located in the English Channel off the southern coast of England, but lies closer to the western coast of France. Travelling to and from the island is simple enough, with many carriers offering flights from several UK cities, including: London, Edinburgh and Cardiff.
The airport is located to the west of the island, about eight kilometres from St Peter. The number 15 Jersey bus runs from St Helier to the airport every 20 or 30 minutes throughout the year. It also stops at St Brelade, St Peter and St Aubin.
If you book with a tour operator or directly with your hotel, transfers can be arranged, and these will be outside the departures hall in the coach area. Taxis are available from outside the terminal, with fares to most hotels ranging from £6 to £10.
Take your time while driving on the island. The roads are good, but traffic can be a problem on the busier routes and around rush hour times. A car ferry operates to and from Portsmouth and takes 10 hours, 30 minutes.
Regular ferry-boats ply the routes between ports in southern England and the port of St Malo, France. There are also high-speed catamarans from both Poole and Weymouth, taking 3 hours, 45 minutes and 3 hours, 30 minutes respectively.
From France, catamarans for foot passengers only operate to and from St Malo, taking 1 hour, 10 minutes. From St Malo, there are regular car/passenger and passenger crossings with Emeraude Lines, and passenger crossings with Condor Ferries. Ferries also run between Granville and Carteret, and services operate between the other Channel Islands as well.
