Car Rental Jerez de la Frontera - Exploring Jerez de la Frontera
Jerez is ideally situated for those who want to get out and about in the Andalusian countryside. Its easy to explore villages of whitewashed houses, vineyards and deserted beaches by car.
One easy drive is to head east from Jerez to Arcos de la Frontera, then south to Paterna before returning to Jerez; during this trip you will pass through no less than 19 villages. Most of the houses are painted in a spotless white, and are decorated with carefully prepared flower boxes, creating some delightful street scenes.
Another alternative is to follow the wine route by heading south towards Cadiz. Before reaching the city, turn right at El Puerto de Santa Maria and continue west and then north to Trebujena. The route passes six villages along the way, as well as countless vineyards producing the sherry grapes for which Jerez is famous.
Perhaps the most tempting drive of all is to go south for 21kms to the coast at Cadiz, which has several imposing colonial buildings in its centre, then drive down the Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light).
Along this coastal road there are some endearing towns such as Conil, which has picturesque streets and a fabulous stretch of soft sand beach that is deserted most of the time. There are in fact over 130 kilometres of great beaches along this coast, so you have plenty of places to choose from. If you continue to the end of the road, you will finally arrive at Tarifa, the southernmost town in Spain.
Cadiz stands on a peninsula jutting out into a bay, and is almost entirely surrounded by water. The Cathedral Nueva, although a grandiose structure capped by a dome of golden tiles, receives few visitors and provides a serene cathedral experience. Additionally, in the crypt lies the tomb of composer Manuel de Falla, a Cadiz native, whose music is evocative of the magic of Andalusia.
Cadizs Archaeology Museum displays some excellent glassware and jewellery. On the second floor of the same building, the Fine Arts Museum includes a Rubens canvas and a set of canvasses by Zurbaran.
