Then the island used to go by the name of Tamna. Eventually in 1105 Tamna ceased being a protectorate of Goryeo and became a province instead and it was then that it was renamed Jeju. Together with Korea Jeju became Japanese colonies in 1910. They only gained their independence when Japan was defeated in 1945 in the Second World War.
