Weather in Italy
Italy's climate varies from north to south and from lowland to mountain top. The northern regions experience chilly winters and hot summers, while conditions become milder as you head south. Summer (June September) gets hot with temperatures reaching into the high 20s, attracting floods of tourists for delightful days in the sea. The Sirocco wind which comes across from Africa affects areas south of Rome and can produce hot, muggy weeks at this time. The winter season (December March) attracts the ski fanatics to the beautiful snow capped peaks of the Alps. Winter in the south is much drier and warmer than in northern and central areas and you can get well into November without feeling the sting of the winter temperatures. Winters are cold and severe in the Alpine region with heavy winter snowfalls starting as early as mid September. Spring (April May) and autumn (October November) are mild with fine, sunny weather and are the best times to visit. During these seasons, the scenery is beautiful and there are relatively few crowds. August is peak season for Italian vacationers, resulting in many shops and businesses being shut down over that month. If you are interested in trekking in the Alps, the summer months of July and September are the most pleasant.
