Exploring Italy

Nothing beats driving the switchbacks of the Alps or exploring the beautiful valleys around Lake Maggiore. In winter the Dolomiti are popular for skiing and provide remarkable scenery. Trieste is an interesting, romantic city.

Florence is set amid the lovely Tuscany countryside, the hill-village of Fiesole, Medici villas, Lucca, and villages of Prato and Pistoia are all worth visiting, along with the spectacular coastline. Pisa is home of the famous leaning tower, to the south are the hills and vineyards of Chianti, Italy's premier wine region.

When in Rome, do as… Many fine examples of antiquity lie on the world’s first ‘highway’ - the Appian Way, which lies in Rome’s outlying suburbs. Tivoli Gardens, to the North, are as lovely as they were 2000 years ago, Ostia Antica is a fascinating ancient port at the river mouth, and evidence of the Etruscan civilization is scatter about the Lazio province.

The beautiful Bay of Naples, is overshadowed by Mt Vesuvius, close by is the fascinating excavated ruins of Pompeii. The Amalfi Coast stretches along a promontory from Sorrento to Salerno and is some of Europe's most beautiful coastline. Capri is a beautiful island of legend. Salerno gives access to the Hellenistic site of Paestum and, just beyond it the uncrowded coastline of the Cilento.
