Located in the region of Sicily, in the province of Messina, is the municipality of Giardini Naxos. Founded in 734 BC, it had an important part in Greek religion, although not an important city in itself. The temple of Apolla Archegetes (protector of all Greek colonies) meant the city played an important part in Greek religious life. Today, the city is important for reasons other than religious; it is a popular tourist destination thanks to its beaches and resorts.
