Mini guide to Issoudun
Issoudun
Issoudun, also known by its ancient Celtic name of Issoundun, is located in the heart of the Champagne Berrichonne region of France. Since 1240, this royal town historically prospered from its markets, wine production and leather goods.
The town has several well preserved sights that give a glimpse into its past. Visitors can begin with a historical tour of the old city, accompanied by an audio guide. If you’d prefer to explore on your own, however, the various buildings are easily accessible.
The 15th to 19th century church of St Cyr displays beautiful 15th century stained glass windows. The Basilique du Sacré Coeur is another intriguing church in the town.
La Tour Blanche is a unique tower of the castle that dates back to the time of Richard I at the end of the 12th century. In May, this tower is the site of a festival during which five artisans are chosen to each open a workshop and an exhibition in the tower.
Visitors should also head to the impressive 18th century Hôtel du Sénéchal and the François Mitterand Park with its lovely walkway along the Théols. The l’Hospice Saint-Roch Museum has a wonderful collection housed in the 15th to 17th century Hôtel Dieu. A significant collection of Gothic sculptures and contemporary art makes this museum a must-see.
