Issoire is one of the fertile plains on the basins of the Allier River called the Petites Limagnes.
During the Roman times, Issoire was known because of its schools. The town of Issoire was believed to be founded by Averni. A Christian community was founded there in the 3rd century by Stremonius. However, this was defeated by the Vandals in the 5th century.
The religious wars during the Reformation have greatly affected Issoire. The Protestant leader, Merle, captured Issoire in the 1574 and the residents were treated with violence and cruelty. The Roman Catholics was able to regain the town three years later.
Because of the great Roman influence on the town of Issoire, a traveler will not miss the Romanesque architecture in the buildings and structures. This can be seen in the Church of Saint Austremoine (Stremonius). This church was built on the site of an old chapel, which is over the tomb of Saint Austremoine.
