Situated on the banks of the Danube River in the state of Barvaria, is the city of Ingolstadt. The fortress (built in 1537) is now a museum, but during WWI French president Charles de Gaulle was held there as a prisoner of war, and the entire city still carries the feeling of its military past – former off-limit places are now parks, and there are two military air bases near the city, one still being used to test planes. Indeed, the Museum of the Barvarian Army is in the city, and it houses the horse of King Gustavus Adolphus. The horse was shot from under the King, by a cannon called ‘The Fig’, located inside the fortress. When the Swedes withdrew, the remains of the horse were preserved.

In 1516, a food law was signed by William IV, Duke of Barvaria, and it is still in use today (although not legally enforced, many breweries claim to abide by it and the traditional usage of only water, barley and hops in the beer) – the oldest of its kind. It deals with the standards of the sale and drinking of beer, and although it is thought to have been first put forward in 1487, was signed by the Duke on April 23, 1516.

In Mary Shelley’s ‘Frankenstein’, Ingolstadt is the town where the monster is created, and the setting for most of the novel.
