Car Rental Indianapolis - Exploring Indianapolis
The central plains area surrounding Indiana is characterized by charming, small market towns, with Kokomo and Evansville both cities of note - the former for its museum dedicated to the maker of the first commercially built automobile, and the latter for its wonderful zoo and aviary.
Hilly southern Indiana, at its most appealing in the fall, is a welcome contrast to the central cornbelt, and boasts several quaint towns such as Nashville, Vincennes, Madison and Corydon. Thriving Columbus exhibits a great array of contemporary architecture for such a small city, and the former resort town West Baden Springs has restored the elegant hotel that made it famous.
Northern Indiana is dominated by the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, which runs for 40kms along southern Lake Michigan and contains many hectares of beaches, sand dunes, bogs and forests. This area makes for a great day lounging on the beach, hiking in the woods, picnicking and camping.
While in the north of the state, be sure to visit the area in and around Elkhart and Goshen, which contains one of the nation's largest Amish settlements. Alternatively, the states second-largest city, Fort Wayne, has a colorful history and is home to a great philharmonic orchestra and a museum devoted entirely to Abraham Lincoln memorabilia.
Amateur paleontologists should head to the 386-million-year-old Devonian fossil beds at Falls of Ohio State Park, located west of Indianapolis. These beds can be explored on foot so long as you tread lightly and stay on the paths.
