IlmenauLocated just left of centre in Germany, in the state of Thuringia, in the district of Ilm-Kreis, is the town of Ilmenau. Nestled between forest and mountains, Ilmenau is the biggest town in Ilm-Kreis, with the River Ilm running through it and shaping the town and the valley.
Ilmenau is also home to the Ilmenau Technological University, founded in 1894, with some 7200 students studying, and many more residing, in the town. Also incorporated into Ilmenau are five surrounding villages, and 80,000 people live in the area surrounding Ilmenau.
Until about 1870, Ilmenau had a population of only about 3000, but the industrial revolution changed all that, with businesses such as the manufacturing of porcelain (1777), glass and toys setting up shop and bringing in more and more people. The mining of copper, silver and manganese has also been important in the history of the town.
In 1879 the rail came to town, then the university, and so did more people. Nowadays the main industries are glasswares and several high-tech industries such as computer programming. Although the unemployment rate is still 16%, it is on the decrease, and Ilmenau still maintains a healthy economic status in comparison to many other European areas. First named in 1273, Ilmenau has had some town rights since 1341.
Crossed by three federal highways and soon to be part of the high-speed rail network, Ilmenau is easily accessible by the main forms of transport so the visitor need not be worried.
Goethe (the German writer and ‘polymath’, or person who is well versed in a variety of fields) holidayed in Ilmenau, and there are many reminders of his presence in the town.
