Hungary has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. Summer (June August) is warm and long with temperatures reaching into the 30s in Budapest and Western Transdanubia. July tends to be the hottest month with an average temperature of 28 degrees. Winters (November March) get very cold and miserable with lots of snow in places. January is the coldest month with temperatures dropping below zero. November receives the highest rainfall, although rainfall does fall throughout the year. Spring and Autumn are mild. Autumn is a particularly beautiful time of year, especially in the northern part of the country. Spring is also stunning, however it can get pretty wet heading into the months of May and June. The country has three main climatic zones. The south has a Mediterranean climate; the east has a continental climate and there is an Atlantic climate in the west. The greatest seasonal variations are on the Great Plains, with freezing winters and steaming summers.
