Car Hire in Hungary - Getting to Hungary
Budapests international airport is the gateway to Hungary, with limited trans-Atlantic flights, but the majority of visitors arrive via London, Amsterdam or Frankfurt. Malév Hungarian Airlines flies to more than 30 European countries, as well as Larnarca, Cairo and Tel Aviv.
Hungary borders seven other countries; and there are crossing points by road and rail to Slovakia Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Yugoslavia, Romania and the Ukraine. Motorists can cross into the country at more than 60 crossings, but some are restricted to Hungarians and citizens of neighbouring countries. Some countries, such as Croatia and Bulgaria can be quite sticky about formalities, in true suspicious Soviet-era style. Not all of the routes are highways or main roads, but the roads are generally in good condition, and reasonably safe. There is a good highway connecting Budapest with Vienna, and a decent road runs south to Zagreb.
Volánbusz is a national bus network which departs regularly from Budapest and other main centres to 18 different European countries.
BY rail, the MÁV (national rail service), is somewhat dated and tardy but runs from Budapest all the way to Rome, London, St Petersburg, Moscow, Stockholm, Paris, Istanbul and many places in-between.
In the summer months, a lovely hydrofoil trip runs between Budapest and Vienna, via Bratislava, along the Danube.
