Car Hire Huddersfield - Mini guide to Huddersfield
Situated on the Colne River in the spectacularly scenic Kirklees area of the Pennines Yorkshire region, Huddersfield is a delightful town full of traditional architecture, fascinating lanes and a pleasant, relaxing atmosphere.
The fantastic Kirklees Light Railway departs from Clayton West, just outside Huddersfield. Ride on Yorkshires Great Little Steam Train, which will carry you through the lovely south Pennines on an old country branch line. A quarter mile tunnel adds to the thrill of this nostalgic eight mile return journey, which features some stunning scenery. Frequent special themed events take place throughout the year.
In town is the acclaimed Huddersfield Art Gallery, with an excellent collection of works by local and national artists.
Huddersfield has ample quality accommodation and some of the regions best restaurants. The Huddersfield Choral Society has an international reputation gained during its 150 year history. Choirs and brass bands can be found in many towns and villages in the district, and the traditional 'sing' (a massed out-door singing get-together) still survives in some localities.
Just out of town is a vast parkland area, Oakwell Hall Country Park, covering 100 acres. There are a number of paths around the park, with some offering disabled access, and there is a bridle-way linking one end of the park to the other, providing a relaxing yet steep ride for cyclists and horse riders. For children this is a large adventure playground and a number of large open areas available for public use. Oakwell Hall is an excellent and well preserved example of 17th century England, complete with original furnished rooms. Further afield are the dramatic moorlands and green valleys of the Peak District and South Pennines.
Leeds/Bradford and Manchester International Airports have a large number of domestic and international scheduled routes. Both airports are easily accessible with a direct rail service to the area from Manchester Airport. Alternatively, the region can be accessed from either airport by car or bus.
