Mini guide to Holzminden
HolzmindenHolzminden is an industrial town in central Germany, known world-wide for their flavor and scent manufacturing used in cosmetics and food products. Holzminden is also the first German city to establish a college for architecture. This capital of the district of Holzminden also has a Roman catholic church and a school for engineering.
The town of Holzminden prospered with the help of agriculture and farming till the 20th century before it became famous for its Symrise industry specializing on flavors and scents. This town became a part of Hanover during the late ‘40s.
Being nearer to the intersection of 2 routes of L550 and B64, this town can be reached by road by taking the routes. The airport of Holzminden-Hoxter is just 4.8Km and the rail is 3.54Km from this town.
Holzminden is a town in Lower Saxony situated on the right banks of the river of Weser near the foothills of the Sollinger Mountains near the city of Hoxter. With an area covering 88.25 km², this city is at an elevation of 89m.
The town can be explored on foot as it is not a big town with no major tourist attractions. Taxis can be hired for an inexpensive rate.
There are 2 museums to visit, one the town museum and another is a doll and toy museum. Other tourist sites include The Tilly house, The Reichspräsidentenhaus, The steeple with its distinctive green lighting during the night and The Severinsche Haus which is known for its slanting floors, distinct weather flag and is the largest small businessmen’s house.
Though guides are not a necessity for this small town, various tour operators can arrange for one who can provide valuable information on the town.
During summer, Holzminden has an approximate temperature of about 20°C and during winter it can go as low as 0°C. The average temperature of Holzminden is 8°C - 16°C.
Capital of the district of the same name is Holzminden, located in the German state of Lower Saxony. Holzminden is situated on the River Weser, which at this junction forms the border to the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Holzminden is first mentioned as the village of Altendorf in the 800s, but that village was subsumed by the city of Holzminden in 1922. Before that, the name ‘Holtesmeni’ (‘monastery’) referred to a monastery that had been started by monks after the closure of the original monastery. The original monastery was further from the river, and was founded by French monks during the time of Ludwig the Pious. Later, when Holzminden was granted municipal laws, many other villages were abandoned as the laws meant better rights for residents.
The industries of craft and farming have long since given way to that of fragrance and flavour – the ingredients manufactured here are used in cosmetics and foods the world over. Dr. Wilhelm Haarmann and Prof. Ferdinand Tiemann first made vanillin flavouring in 1874, and today Holzminden is famous for its food and fragrance additives.
The oldest church in town is that of Saint Paul, from about 1200 or perhaps earlier. It may not contain old works of art as many other churches do, but the peace and tranquillity to be found in this little old building more than makes up for it, so find some time while you’re holidaying in Holzminden to pause and reflect in the historic house of worship.
There are many other sites, namely the Tilly House dating from 1609. During the 30 year war, it is said that Tilly spent the night here. The front door of the house survives all the attacks and fires of the war, and is a beautiful example of Renaissance work.
