Hildesheim was the head of the Bishopric of Hildesheim during its early times before it became a part of Kingdom of Hanover. Known as the ""Nuremberg of the north"" before the Second World War, most of the city was almost destroyed by the air raids during the war. The present city consists mostly of postwar buildings and many historical buildings were re-built after the demolition.
The most recommended transportation to Hildesheim is by car via the Autobahn A7. Although, it is also a 30 minute ride from Hanover by rail.
Hildesheim is situated in Lower Saxony, Germany and can be located at about 25kms from Hanover. Covering an area of about 35.9 square miles, this city has an elevation of 78m and a population of over 103,000.

One of the most significant places to visit in Hildesheim is the Church of St.Michael- known for its architecture and painting of Jesus’ family tree- and St.Mary’s cathedral which are on the list of UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage. Other important landmarks include The Roemer und Pelizaeus Museum – one of Germany’s oldest museums, the historic Marketplace (Markt), the Guild Hall and a few other cathedrals.
