This French town marks the most southwestern point in the country, situated on the border of Spain in Basque Country. Wedged between the Pyrénées Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, Hendaye has become a popular seaside resort for tourists visiting the French Basque Country.

The town, also called Hendaia in Basque, is split into two sections located about one mile (2kms) apart. The medieval Basque Town is perched on a hill with panoramic views of the Pyrénées Mountains and the Bay of Chingoudy. The town hall and most of the town’s shopping are located in the Basque Town.

Visitors should not miss the weekly Wednesday market in the town square. The square is also home to the Great Cross of Hendaye, a renowned 17th century stone cross depicting cryptic alchemical symbols. The church of St Vincent also merits a visit, despite suffering several destruction and reconstruction several times since its original erection in 1598.

The more modern beachfront area of Hendaye is situated on a peninsula surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the bay and the river. The large bay area is a perfect spot for wind surfing and other water sports. The Marina is located on this side and several facilities are available for various sports and boating activities.

A number of hotels, a casino and the Serge Blanco Thalasso Centre are found on the Atlantic side of the peninsula, known for its great surf. You should also head to the Château of Antoine d’Abbadie, an impressive Gothic Revival castle.
