Havasu Canyon, located on the South Rim of the spectacular Grand Canyon, is truly a paradise in this rugged landscape. With its turquoise waters flowing through the sandstone, the canyon forms a beautiful oasis in the middle of an unrelenting dry desert.

Havasu Creek winds through picturesque red cliffs, over pristine waterfalls and flows into the Colorado River farther downstream. There’s really only one way to explore this desert paradise – on foot. The main trail begins at Hualapai hilltop, where visitors pitch tents and stay overnight to enjoy the morning’s hospitable weather.

The trail drops into the heart of Hualapai Canyon, revealing cottonwoods, box elders and shady willow trees. Following this amazing trail, you’ll pass peach orchards and fields of corn, and be met finally by the village of Supai. The campgrounds are a little farther on; however, if you feel fatigued, horses are available at the village.

The tribal centre for the Havasupai Indians, as well as the canyon’s administrative headquarters, are located Supai. Here you’ll also find most conveniences, including a store, café, lodge, post office and a small museum. The great Havasu Falls is ideal for picnicking; while Mooney Falls has a beautiful pool at its foot, a good place to freshen up or take a plunge.

Havasu Canyon is three hours from Flagstaff, Arizona, and four hours from the glittering lights of the casinos in Las Vegas, Nevada. You may also want to spend some time at the watery playgrounds of Lake Powell in Utah or Lake Mead in Nevada.

If you are heading to the canyon complex, then the closest you can get by car is Hualapai Hilltop. Indian Road 18 leads to the hilltop off Highway 66 and is 109kms from Peach Springs, which is the last place you can buy much needed water and snacks. The closest major airports are Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.
