Hamilton, located on the western edge of Lake Ontario, is well known to most Canadians as an industrial town. Nevertheless, the city does have many attractions, including museums, modern leisure facilities and a varied selection of restaurants, bars and pubs. Hamilton also has some attractive geographical features.

One of the more interesting museums in Hamilton is the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum. Considered one of the best of its kind, this museum is home to 40 military aircraft that cover the Royal Canadian Airforce’s history since WWII. Excellent displays of Canadian, US and European contemporary art can be seen at the Hamilton Art Museum; while the McMaster Museum of Art offers a remarkable collection of impressionist works.

Walking along the promenade, you’ll find the Dundurn National Historic Site, which is home to Dundurn Castle, a fabulous Italian style villa, arguably one of the most impressive architectural pieces in the city. The Whitehearn Historic House, with its Georgian style architecture, is also worth visiting.

Nearby Niagara Falls attracts over 12 million visitors a year. The falls consist of: American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Canadian/Horseshoe Falls. The Canadian side is probably the best place to see the falls; while the town of Niagara has an abundance of attractions, hotels and convention centres.

Hamilton is an easy drive from Toronto, where most visitors to southwestern Ontario begin their trip. Simply drive along the QEW highway that begins on the lakeshore in Toronto and flows straight into the city centre of Hamilton. The city is also on the Go Train line, an efficient commuter train that links Toronto with other centres in the region.

For those choosing to travel to Hamilton by long distance bus, Greyhound provides service throughout Canada and the USA. Hamilton has its own airport, the John C Munro International, which is becoming more popular as an alternative to the much busier airport in Toronto.
