The Gothic church of St-Nicolas was erected in the 13th and 14th centuries, and is well worth the visit to the north side of town. The church of St Georges, originally constructed in the 12th and 13th centuries, displays both Gothic and Romanesque styles. This church is known for housing the oldest bells in the Alsace region (dating from the 13th century) and a massive 15th century wooden statue of Christ.

The History Museum has a comprehensive display highlighting town’s past, explaining its status centuries ago as the main Alsatian imperial free city. The Alsacien Museum also merits a visit if you’re interested in the city’s rich history.

You might want to take a walk to the Tower of the Knights (Tour des Chevaliers) and the Tower of the Fishermen (Tour des Pêcheurs). The Fleckenstein Court is another interesting stop in Haguenau.

For a quick escape from the town, head north to the Haguenau Forest, the largest area of undivided forest in France.
