Located near the River Wey - one of the oldest waterways in the country -Guildford is the ideal location from which to hire a boat for a day and discover this picturesque river. Alternatively, simply take a relaxing stroll along the riverbank and explore the area. Guildford is also renowned for its castle and spectacular grounds. Built during the reign of King Henry II, the stone keep is all that remains of Guildford Castle.
The Guildford Museum is another attraction that is well worth a visit. This 17th century house contains collections on the local history of Surrey, dating back to prehistoric times. Guildford Cathedral is one of only two new Anglican cathedrals on new sites since the Middle Ages. Its foundation stone was laid in 1936 and it was consecrated in 1961. Guildford House Gallery is one of Guildford’s important historic buildings, and houses several temporary exhibitions as well as an art collection.
Shop along Guildford’s traditional High Street, and try Guildford’s excellent restaurants and pubs. Every Friday and Saturday visit the street market, where you can buy fresh fruit and produce, flowers, clothing and fancy goods. Guildford also hosts an annual early summer music festival.
Travel outside the town and you will discover charming villages, historic houses and lovely countryside. Loseley Park is an early Elizabethan mansion with a walled garden and chapel set in 1400 acres of rolling countryside. The North Downs Way National Trail takes walkers on a voyage of discovery through ancient woodlands, offering stunning views.
Being close to London, Guildford has excellent rail links to Central London and Portsmouth, including a twice hourly non-stop service to and from London’s Waterloo Station (30 minutes duration). Motorists can reach Guildford most conveniently using the A3 via junction 10 of London’s M25.
