On the edge of nowhere is a town in northeastern Germany--Greifswald. In Medieval times it was once an unsettled woodland. Located near the Bay of Grefswald, its terrain is mostly plains; the highest point reaching only 36 meters. Tourism plays a vital role as Greifswald is situated between the islands of Rugen and Usedom at the popular Baltic coast, which brings in many visitors. Greifswald is the fifth largest producer of yachts worldwide, which has a main port. If you choose, take a private boat or fly into one of the nearby airports—Tegel Aiport, Trollenhagen Airport or Laage Airport. You can take a bus from the airport to the train station, which will take you to Greifswald. At the end of the 13th century it became one of the earliest members of the Hanseatic League, which resulted in increase trade and wealth. The salt trade helped Greifswald to become a known market as well. Reconstruction of the old town came in 1800’s. Nearly all of it has been restored. Its seaside evolved into a fishing village, and today provides a small beach, and marina. With a population of roughly 45,000, 11,000 include students of the traditional university of Greifswald. It carries an intellectual role as a university town.

With its theatres, operas, and old shops, Greifswald’s historic marketplace is considered one of the most beautiful in Germany. An attractive destination for tourist interested in history and culture, a number of unique festivals are held, which include Bach Week every summer, Fisherman’s Festival, Greifswald International Students Festival, Jazz Evenings, and Baltic Festival. You’ll also want to explore the ruins of Eldena monastery founded 1199 and the great Greifswald cathedral. For the more adventurous, there are diving expeditions off deep-water areas of the Baltic Sea. Greifswald’s weather is sometimes overcast 37 degrees Fahrenheit with wind at about 9 mph, so dress warmly.
