Graz
With stunning natural scenery, magnificent architectural heritage and traditional atmosphere, the fortified Styrian city of Graz is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Austria.
The imposing Eggenburg Castle that watches over the city from the top of the Schlossberg is the most alluring of Graz’s architectural heritage. The 17th century castle has a stunning 365 windows &endash; a different view for each day of the year. Climb to the top and enjoy spectacular views of the city below and the backdrop of mountains to the north, east and west. The castle park is also a pleasant spot for picnicking, with lush green gardens and an assortment of wild fauna.
Other classic examples of the city’s magnificent buildings are the 16th century Uhrturm, a clocktower still using the original clockwork from 1712, the Landhaus, the Mausoleum, the Rathaus, the Domkirche Cathedral, the Minoritenkirche and the Landeszeughaus, which houses the world’s largest collection of medieval arms worldwide &endash; almost 30,000 pieces in total.
Graz has some of Austria’s finest hotels and restaurants, and boasts many excellent cafes and bars in which to absorb the traditional atmosphere of this medieval town.
The city is the perfect base for exploring the beautiful rolling hills, deep valleys and lush forests of the Styrian region. Discover quaint villages and hike pleasant mountain trails in the surrounding countryside.
