Puerto de Agaete is an area catering to sightseers and it abounds in rich historic monuments and buildings. A walking tour of the area can prove both entertaining and enlightening.

The historic area has lots of architecturally interesting buildings, such as the Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion dating from 1874, with its distinctive red dome.

A short distance from the church you can find a delightful botanical garden where legend has it the poet Tomas Morales penned some of his best poetry. These gardens are full of interesting rare blooms and plenty of species unique to the Canaries. It is open daily from 8am to 12 noon and definitely worth the trip.

Agaete is only about thirty-six kilometers from Las Palmas, and forty kilometers across the sea from Tenerife. The climate is very pleasant and air temperatures usually hover between eighteen and twenty-three degrees Celsius in winter and twenty to twenty-seven degrees in summer.

The whole Agaete region sits in a spectacular valley sandwiched in between the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Once a fishermen’s village, it has many small, narrow streets and quaint white houses. The small town center also offers a variety of shops and eateries offering the local seafood specialties.

The terrain of this region is marked by numerous ravines (called barranco), and numerous mangos, oranges, bananas and avocados trees can be found in their fertile valleys. This is a good time to visit Agaete and this entire region of Gran Canaria's west coast since it is still pretty much untouched by the ravages of tourism.

The GC-2 motorway runs from the top of Gran Canaria, from the Las Palmas area and so this region is easily accessible by vehicle. Puerto de Agaete is served by boat as well and guests arrive each day via the high speed ferry system. The whole region is an attractive spot and presents plenty of opportunity for self-guided walking tours along the quaint cobblestone streets. It is a particularly relaxed town and one definitely not to be missed by any tourist to the Canary Islands.
