Mini guide to Gothenburg
Sweden's second city, Gothenburg - situated on the country's west coast - has a magnificent harbour. Also called the natural gateway to the West, Gothenburgs harbour is a vital artery for Sweden.
There is no shortage of museums in Gothenburg. The Stadtsmuseum is located in the former site of the headquarters of the Swedish East India Company and includes an extensive collection of porcelain and the famous Äskekärr Viking ship. Visit the nearby Maritima Centrum where you can roam aboard the destroyer and submarine moored at the quayside.
Götaplatsen is the modern cultural center of Gothenburg and a nexus between the citys past and future. An afternoon stroll at the Konstmuseet (Art Museum) will reveal the gamut of art styles, ranging from Impressionist paintings, Pop Art and most impressively superb Swedish work.
The most popular attraction in Sweden, Liseberg is one of the world's best amusement parks. The prime attraction is Spaceport Liseberg, which dominates the park at a height of 150m. After Liseberg the collected museums are the strongest attractions.
Nearby is the Gothenburg archipelago, consisting of Vrångö, Brännö, Styrsö, Vargö and the other inhabited isles each with their own charm. All of the islands in the south are free of cars, and there are plenty of paths between the genuine fishing cottages and wonderful bathing rocks.
East of Gothenburg is the beautiful Vadstena, set along Lake Vättern. Being one of the most pleasant towns in Sweden and easily accessed by car with its network of well maintained and traffic-free roads, is the imposing Renaissance castle of Vadstena slott which looks straight over the harbour and lake beyond. It is a mighty family project of the early Vasa kings, and it houses in the upper apartments some items of period furniture and paintings, including a Van Dyck.
Gothenburg receives flights from many European cities. Most flights from North American and Asian centers fly through Copenhagen where you may have to change planes with links to most major cities in Sweden.
